A boat is a watercraft that is specifically designed for sailing in near-shore areas and inland waterways like lakes and rivers. What makes it different from a ship is its smaller size and lesser carrying capacity. According to history, boats have been used for transportation since pre-historic times and the oldest known boat is called dugouts. Apart from being used for recreational purpose boats have also been used in the modern commercial world by being a transportation device for both passengers and small cargo.

Types of Boats

There are several types of boats but it seems almost impossible to list them all down but primarily, boats can be classified into three main sections such as:

  • Man-powered boats

Jet boats are known for its maneuverability which is powered by a jet of water ejected from behind of the boat. Its appearance is similar to a bow-rider because it offers a lot of seating area with a swimming platform. Runabout boats are capable of accommodating four to eight people. They are usually used for racing, water skiing, and fishing. Runabout boats are open boats that is controlled by a steering wheel with forward controls that is located behind a windscreen. Personal Watercraft boats are popularly known as water scooter and jet ski which are customized boats that is used for adventurous activities. The motor yacht boats are the latest addition to the evolution of boats and it is usually used for leisure activities. It has one or two diesel engines as a navigation requirement in inland waters and oceans. It is safe and perfect for an enjoyable family trip and long period of sailing on the water. There are different types of yacht namely day sailing yachts, cruising yachts, weekender yachts, and luxury sailing yachts and each of them meets various requirements.

6. Cabin Cruiser Boats

Cabin cruiser boats have all the essential features of a house and it is great for relaxed sailing. These boats have air conditioners, power generators, and heaters. It has a secure shaft drive mechanism and a rudder steering which is suitable for sailing the salty water.

This feature makes the trawler a perfect choice for participating in long-range cruising. It also has modern facilities like air conditioning and plumbing.

8. Houseboats

These houseboats comes in different shapes and sizes. It offers the indulgence of living on water and at the same time providing an excellent holiday accommodation facilities. Also known as float house, these boats have modern amenities such as fine dining, proper sleeping amenities, and entertainment.

A dinghy boat are small inflatable boat that is usually made of rubber which includes cross thwarts and rowlocks that acts as oars and seats. Dinghy boats are commonly powered by oars, sails, and small outboard engines. They are popularly known as rowboats, inflatables, and sailboats. They can also be used as companion boats and they can be taken to camping expeditions.
